Mermaid Whispers

With drill in hand!

Hello and thank you for visiting Mermaid Whispers! I am Emma - a single mother of three children with a life-long interest in craft; jewellery making in particular. In the past I have made pieces with a varied

selection of materials but a spontaneous beachcombing trip resulted in my returning home with such a beautiful selection of coloured sea glass that I was inspired to use it in my jewellery. The reaction I got from those who saw it was so positive that I decided to do it properly. I have therefore set up my own business so that I can continue to care for my children whilst working at something I enjoy. And so Mermaid Whispers was born.

What is Sea Glass?

Sea glass is any piece of glass which has been tumbled by the tides of the sea for many years. Decades in the water give it a smooth and frosted appearance and every piece is unique; its size and shape formed naturally by the action of the waves. Sea glass can be found in many colours, with white and bottle green the most common and red and yellow being among the rarest.

There are also opaque pieces, usually in pale, pretty colours, known as 'milk' glass and multi-coloured pieces, known as 'end of day' glass, which were created from the remains of molten glass left in the pots at

the end of the working day. These are often the most beautiful pieces and are highly sought by collectors.

Most of the sea glass used in Mermaid Whispers jewellery has come from the North Sea; formed from waste which was dumped daily along the East Coast by glass producing factories from the mid 1800's until after the First World War.

Our Jewellery

The sea glass I use has all been hand-picked from beaches and then washed gently. Each piece is otherwise left exactly as it was. Any marks or blemishes have been formed by the waves and I believe this adds to the natural beauty of each item.

Unless otherwise stated, all Mermaid Whispers jewellery is made with 925 sterling silver with bails and findings chosen to compliment each piece of sea glass perfectly. All our pendant chains are 18" diamond cut curb chains and connect with a spring-ring clasp.

If you would like to be informed as soon as new items are added to our online shops please 'like' the Mermaid Whispers

Facebook page, which will also keep you up to date with news of special offers and events.

To keep our jewellery at its best please remove it when bathing, cleaning, swimming and sleeping. It should be stored in a cool, dry place and extreme temperatures should be avoided as this may cause the glass to crack. It should be cleaned gently with a soft cloth to remove oil and dirt.

Each piece of glass is sold as found giving it a slightly frosted appearance. If you would like to enhance the appearance or the colours you may wish to use a tiny amount of baby oil on a soft cloth and wipe gently over the surface which will temporarily give a more polished finish.

Our Jewellery Boxes

All our necklaces, pendants, earrings and bracelets come on a velvet pad inside a

stylish box and are therefore ready to be gifted.  Our charms come in an organza bag and our bolo ties and chokers are attached to white card.
